How do I Find a Life Insurance Policy Owed in Oregon?

Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions

  1. Step 1

Check your deceased relative’s bank account statements, tax returns and personal belongings. There may be clues like receipts or canceled checks to life insurance companies for the payment of insurance premiums, or interest paid on a life insurance loan.

  2. Step 2

Contact your relative’s life insurance company, which will send you a death claim form in the mail. Return the claim form with a copy of the death certificate for your deceased relative, and allow the insurance company to process your claim. Insurance companies doing business in Oregon have 30 days to process your claim, or they must pay interest on the death benefit proceeds.

  3. Step 3

Contact Oregon’s unclaimed funds department. The state of Oregon maintains an unclaimed property department. You can also visit the department’s website. Click on the “Unclaimed Property Name Search” link, which is located under the heading “Find Unclaimed Property” on the left side of the screen. Type in your name and start your search. When you find your name among the listings, click on it to verify your address and contact information. Then click “inquiry form” to fill out an inquiry form for your unclaimed property. If you are the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, and the insurance company does not have the funds, the unclaimed property division of the state of Oregon will have the funds.
